 Mr. Donald Reese “Don” Wilkes, 74, husband of Nancy Thornhill Wilkes, died Friday, September 9, 2011, at his residence after an illness. Mr. Wilkes was born December 8, 1936, in Florence County, a son of the late Press Wilkes and Hannah Miles Wilkes Matthews. He graduated from Florence County schools and was retired from law enforcement. Don served as a policeman with the Lake City Police Department and later as chief deputy for three different sheriffs with the Williamsburg Sheriff’s Department. Surviving in addition to his wife Nancy, of Kingstree are: his children, Donna (Clay) Matthews, Linda (Samuel David) Hanniford, Vicki (Randy II) Haselden, Kenny (Renita) Wilkes, Allen (Kim) Wilkes, and Terry (Tammy) Wilkes, all of Kingstree, David (Linda) Wilkes, of Ladson, Tony (Karen) Wilkes, of Pamplico, and Linda (John) Whitaker, of Rocky Mount, NC; a brother Bob Wilkes, of Columbia; 2 step sisters, Harriett Russ and Isabel Langston; a step brother Clifford Matthews; 13 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren. Special thanks go to special friend Brandon McGee and special niece Casey Gause, and for all the help from Hospice Care of SC. Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Sunday, September 11, 2011, in the Second Baptist Church of Kingstree, with burial in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Saturday at Williamsburg Funeral Home.
